Description
Line-art reconstruction of a juvenile Jeholosaurus shangyaunensis. Done on a whim based upon a skeletal by Pete Buchholz, which is in turn reconstructed from specimens IVPP V15719 and IVPP V12530, both of which are of very small size, leaving the overall animal at somewhere around 50cm long.
Buchholz described the living animal as perhaps looking something like a pigeon with a squirrel tail, though mine has ended up looking more like a chicken, duckling, or young ratite.

Very cute By "pigeon with a squirrel tail," I meant that if you saw one walking in the woods, it would be about the size and shape of a pigeon, but with a long and (probably) bushy tail. I hope that Jeholosaurus (or another jeholosaurid) will be found in the lagerstätte beds within the Yixian formation so we can find out how widespread dinofuzz was in ornithischians. Personally.... I think that in the wet and relatively cool (and seasonally snowy) environment that was present for much of the Yixian Formation's depositional history we're likely to see fuzzy jeholosaurids.
